Importance of Self-Care

I feel like self-care/self-love are HUGE right now. I wanted to create a post about self-care because it was something I have been thinking about a lot lately and how beneficial it can be.

Today after my workout, I reflected on how taking just an hour out of my day after work to do something for myself made me feel. Personally, I consider working out a form of self-care because of the way it makes me feel. After a good workout I feel energized and accomplished. Weeks when I slack off and don’t make it to the gym I tend to feel tired and grouchy and overall my mood is down. I take this time to benefit myself mentally and physically.

This made me think about other things that I do that would fall under the “self-care” category. I think that self-care is something everyone should take seriously for their mental and physical health. I believe that there is no one definition of self-care because it is going to be slightly different for everyone, hence the word self. To me it means taking the time to unwind, relax and do something for myself. It’s so important to take time for yourself, otherwise you’ll find yourself feeling run down. I think we all have experienced moments when we have over-committed ourselves to things and don’t have enough down time to breathe.

I made a list to share of some things I do for self-care! Some of these may be obvious or simple but I think there are so many different ways we can honor ourselves and our bodies.

  • Read a book
  • Workout
  • Meditate
  • Write in a journal
  • Take a bath
  • Do a face/hair masque
  • Drink tea
  • Cuddle with your dog (like we don’t do this everyday anyways)
  • Eat your favorite food(s)
  • Get your nails done
  • Try something you have always wanted to
  • Binge watch a show
  •  Take a nap

These and so many others, I would consider acts of self-care. I did a little research on self-care and found that most people classify it as getting enough sleep, eating healthy and exercising. I truly believe that it goes beyond that. While doing these things are great for your health, I think that it is important to remember that each and every one of us do things differently and can define self-care differently. For one person, working out might be something they consider self-care, for another taking a day off from working out to relax might be considered self-care. It is all about perspective and how we view these things. Whatever you do for self-care, make sure that it makes you feel good and is beneficial to you!

I hope that you guys enjoyed this post! It’s a little different than my normal posts but as I mentioned, this seems to be a hot topic right now and is something I wanted to share my thoughts on.

What are your views on self-care? What do you do that you consider self-care acts? I’d love to hear! Let me know in the comments.

Molly 🙂
